The mission of the Hugh B. Bain Middle School is to create an educational environment that prepares students to become life-long learners, responsible citizens, and productive workers.[1]




Introduction




Cranston, Rhode Island is one of the major suburbs of Providence. The Cranston school district is one of the largest in the State of Rhode Island. It contains 25 schools from elementary to high school, with a little under 11,000 students. Cranston, as a major suburb of Providence, is located in the middle of the state. The focus of this report is on one of the middle schools located on Gansett Avenue, in downtown Cranston. This school is Hugh B. Bain Middle School. The school itself was constructed in 1930 as a junior high, the first in the community.[2]


This report will hopefully give you, the reader, a better understanding of Hugh B Bain Middle School; its demographics, faculty, safety, and assessments.

Hugh B Bain Middle School has a large student population with a little under 700 students. The majority of the students are white at 64%. The rest of the school has a diverse group of Minorities. Leading the way are Hispanic students at 18%. Next is Asian Students with 10% of the population. Then comes African American students at 6%. Finally to round out the student population is the Native American students at 1%.[3]

Hugh B Bain Middle School was originally designed to be a junior high with grades 7-9. In the mid-1990's , however, it changed to the middle school format. In this middle school format Hugh B Bain now contained grades six through eight. It is run by a professional staff. This staff includes a principle, assistant principle, and a 21st Century program director. In terms of the faculty there are 82. The school also has a staff that includes a psychologist, two social workers, a nurse, five secretaries, three custodians, and seven kitchen staff.[4]

Safety is a big priority for all schools. Hugh B Bane Middle School focuses on making itself a safe learning environment for the students. The schools policy on discipline can be found on the school website (http://www.cps.k12.ri.us/bainhome/) under policies. When looking at the data the school is right around the state average for all the categories. The one above state average is students robbed in school at 29% compared to the state 27%. The rest of the categories are are just under the state averages or the same as the state averages.[5]





Assessments

In Hugh B Bane Middle School over the past year has increased in proficiency for all of the major subjects. For the sixth grade, math and writing increased in proficiency by six and seven percent respectively. The seventh grade also increased with math increasing by eight percent. The writing was up to 73% profficiency this year. In the eighth grade writing is added to proficiency tests and the percent was increased by ten percent this year. In Math and writing the percent increase was four percent and three percent respectively. [6]






Conclusion


Overall Hugh B Bain Middle School is a good school in one of the larger districts in Rhode Island. Through demographics the school shows diversity in the class room. In the faculty of Bain middle school there is a well put together staff, ready to do their jobs. The school is also a fairly safe school with below state average stats. Finally the school shows that it is making improvements in assessments. Hugh B Bain has been a staple in the Cranston school system since its construction in 1930 and looks to be in the future.
